TITLE: Fermat's Last Theorem: From the 1600's to 1994.

Abstract

I'll give a historical survey of the progress on finding (or not finding!) diophantine solutions to the equation

xn+yn=zn.
I'll outline the recent developments linking solutions to Fermat's last theorem to elliptic curves and the (now proven) conjecture of Shimura and Taniyama.
